August 2026 Steel Import Permits: Roll Forming Update
U.S. steel import permits increased in August 2026, with gains in several sheet products used in metal manufacturing. For companies planning custom roll forming projects, the latest American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) report offers a useful market update.

In its September 10 report, AISI put August permit applications at 2.499 million net tons, an 8.9% increase over July permit tonnage. Finished steel permits totaled 1.694 million net tons, and estimated finished steel import market share reached 18%.
Compared with July’s final imports, August permit volumes rose 67% for hot rolled sheets, 33% for cold rolled sheets, and 28% for galvanized and electrolytic sheets and strip.
