According to the latest data from the Steel Import Monitoring and Analysis (SIMA) by the Commerce Department, the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) revealed that steel import permit applications in September reached 2,289,000 net tons (NT)*. This represents a modest 0.7% increase from August’s 2,272,000 permit tons and a 0.5% rise from the final import total of 2,279,000 in August. Notably, the import permit tonnage for finished steel in September stood at 1,659,000, marking a 10.8% decrease from August’s final imports total of 1,860,000. For the first nine months of 2023, combining September’s SIMA permits and August’s final imports, the total and finished steel imports registered at 21,946,000 NT and 16,807,000 NT, reflecting declines of 9.4% and 14.5%, respectively, compared to the same period in 2022. In September, the estimated market share for finished steel imports was 20%, and year-to-date (YTD) it stands at 22%.
