U.S. Steel Shipments Increase Year-Over-Year Despite April Slowdown

Recent data released by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) shows that U.S. steel shipments continue to outperform 2025 levels, despite a month-over-month decline in April.

According to AISI, U.S. steel mills shipped approximately 7.66 million net tons of steel in April 2026, representing a 1.1% increase compared to April 2025. While shipments were down 6.6% from March 2026 levels, overall demand remains strong, with year-to-date steel shipments reaching 30.85 million net tons through the first four months of 2026.

Steel Market Trends in 2026

The latest shipment data highlights continued strength in several key steel products used throughout the manufacturing and metal stamping industries:

* Corrosion-resistant sheet and strip shipments increased 13% year-over-year.
* Hot rolled sheet and strip shipments increased 4%.
* Cold rolled sheet and strip shipments declined 4%.

These trends reflect ongoing demand from industries including automotive manufacturing, industrial equipment, construction, and appliance production.

What This Means for Manufacturers

For manufacturers that rely on precision metal stampings and fabricated steel components, the increase in overall steel shipments suggests continued market stability and strong industrial activity. Growth in corrosion-resistant and hot rolled steel products may also indicate increased production in sectors requiring durable, high-performance materials.

While April shipments experienced a seasonal decline from March levels, year-to-date steel shipments remain 3.6% higher than the same period in 2025, signaling positive momentum for the domestic steel market.
